The fine ends and tips of these instruments need to be protected carefully because they are easily bent or thrown out of alignment if handled roughly.

Micro clips used with a clip applicator to occlude small vessels are also spring-loaded, as with the Yasargil clips (■ Figure 8.26). This technique of ‘open surgical clipping’ is performed for aneurysms in the vasculature of the brain to treat and prevent rupture of these aneurysms, which would cause a subarachnoid haemorrhage (■ Figure 8.27).
